LITERACY

Although it may be several years before the newborn is actually ready to read and write, but the journey to literacy has already begun.

Early literacy is much more than ABCs, or color & shape recognitions. Early Literacy does not advocate “the teaching of reading” during early childhood years. Introducing literacy into your child should not be about confining him/her to the printed ink on a page.

It recognizes and emphasizes on the fact that the child proficiently acquires the ability to read and write, only after undergoing a certain set of skills during the early childhood days.

Early reading skills include matching, rhyming, awareness of phonics and the skills associated with language development such as listening, attention, alliteration and sound discrimination.
All of the above is being imbibed by young children and just a little attention can work wonders for the development of literacy skills. Early literacy can be embedded in in daily routines

  • Chatting away in funny voices as you flick through picture book.
  • Sharing a story with your child can have a has a huge impact on his/her interest and motivation for reading later on.
  • Taking a walk down the market and observing all the signboards, getting down the lift and observing numbers for the floor levels.

Chapter 6.11

Early Literacy for Preschoolers

Before your child begins to write, she needs to develop the ability to speak, listen, watch, understand and scribble.
